Are burritos American or Mexican?

Burrito is a Mexican dish, which can also be attributed to Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine. Basically, it is very popular throughout the United States as a Tex-Mex dish. However, it took another form in San Francisco, which is popularly known as mission-style burritos. It is over-stuffed burritos and the name has derived from a neighborhood in San Francisco. People also enjoy it nationwide in any choice available breakfast and dinner options.

You can even offer both the burritos in a wide range of cheeses, vegetables, meats, and a lot of fillings. And, as mentioned already, the topping mostly includes salsas and sauces.

Ingredients:

  • Beef minute steaks (2 x 120g)
  • Gem lettuce (1 baby gem)
  • Garlic (1 garlic clove)
  • Cheddar cheese (20 grams)
  • Black beans (1 x 400 g)
  • Olive oil (As per your liking)
  • Extra virgin olive oil (As per your liking)
  • Pepper (1 red pepper)
  • Freshly ground cumin (1/2 teaspoon)
  • Cherry tomatoes (100 grams)
  • Lime (1 piece)
  • Flour tortillas (2 whole meals)
  • Fresh coriander (1/4 of a bunch)
  • To taste, black pepper and sea salt

Instructions

  • Begin by removing and the steak from the fridge and let the steak reach room temperature. Meanwhile, grate the cheese nicely, roughly chop the lettuce after trimming, and finely chop the whole garlic clove after peeling.
  • On medium-high heat, in a non-stick frying pan, heat olive oil (heat a splash), and with a good splash of the liquid add ½ of the beans.
  • At the same time, add cumin, garlic along with a heavy pinch of black pepper and sea salt. When the mixture thickens, within 7-10 minutes, stop heating.
  • Halve, then chop the pepper finely after deseeding along with the cherry tomatoes. Then place both the ingredients in a small bowl.
  • Then season the ingredients well using a splash of extra virgin olive oil and lime juice (1 squeeze at best). Then, chop the coriander leaves and add to the bowl and whisk to mix perfectly.
  • Now, over medium-high heat, preheat your griddle. Then season the steak with black pepper, sea salt after drizzling with oil. Make sure to rub the seasoning all over the steaks, and then add the steaks to the griddle.
  • Cook the steaks for 90 seconds, flip over, cook the other side for another 90 seconds. Remove from the griddle and set aside in a warm plate to rest.
  • At this point, use a fork or potato masher to mash the beans, frequently adding, for better results, a few flashes of water to loosen. Then spread the beans all over the tortillas.

Now, to finish the best steak for burritos, divide the steaks by slicing them evenly. Top with lettuce, cheese, and a suitable amount of salsa all over. Wrap them up, serve and enjoy!

Go veggie with beef burrito recipes

If you want to go veggie with the beef burrito, the formula is very simple and you will just need a sweet potato along with sliced avocado, peppers, or whatever you like.

  • At first, scrub the sweet potato and roast it in a gas oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 180 degrees Celsius for 75-80 minutes continuously.
  • Then, carefully replace it with the steak after scooping out the flesh.
  • After that, you can even embellish with sliced avocado, crumbled feta cheese, or griddled peppers.

Swap Ingredients

  • If you don’t like black beans or you don’t have them in the first place, you can use red kidney, cannellini, black-eyed, pinto, or mixed beans.
  • Another great substitute for the steak would be skinless, boneless thighs or free-range chicken breasts. It all depends on what you prefer.
  • You can even swap the steak nicely with salmon! Isn’t that great?
  • Also, if you are using feta cheese, you can replace it with cheddar. Very straightforward!
  • If you want to swap cumin, do it with paprika. The pairing is magnificent!
  • Last, but not the least, if you care for a little heat, slice 1 freshly ground chili and mix it with the salsa.

Recipe notes

  • If you want perfect caramelization on the outside, you have to add the steaks on a very nice and hot griddle. Be very careful!
