There are a couple of sweet potato roll recipes, but this one attracts me the most out of all. To me, these homemade, super fluffy, and delicious dinner potato rolls are the only potato rolls, if not among anyone would ever need!
These potato rolls are preposterously easy to whip up and it’s like a dream to work with the dough! So, as you can understand, today I have the best recipe for sweet potato roll.
One more thing, if you haven’t tried my versions of other potato-based recipes, the Delicious Mashed Potatoes Recipe and Buffalo Wild Wings Potato Wedges, try them now for a diversified cooking experience in your comfort zone.
Ingredients
- Mashed sweet potatoes (1/2 cup; around 106g). Any of the sweet, squash, yam, pumpkin or regular potato will do.
- All-purpose flour (3 and ½ cups; around 420g to 485g).
- Large eggs (3 pieces)
- Butter (3 tablespoons; around 43g)
- Cinnamon (1 teaspoon)
- Granulated sugar (1/4 cup; 50g)
- Warm water (1/2cup; around 113g), or
- Half warm water and half milk (1/4 cup each; around 57g each)
- Active and dry yeast (2 tablespoons; around 18g), or
- Instant yeast (1 and ½ tablespoons; around 14g)
- To taste, salt (1 and ½ teaspoons; around 9g)
Directions
- Take a large bowl and put the whole amount of warm water (or water + milk) in it. Mix the yeast in the water and let it sit for 10-12 minutes. Then, when the yeast is about to get started, melt the butter in another bowl and let it cool down.
- Now, in the yeast mixture bowl, add the flour, mashed vegetables, eggs, butter, cinnamon, and salt. Stir to have a perfect blend so that the dough be quite slack.
- Stir by hand or use an electric mixer’s flat beater to beat the blend for at least 6-7 minutes.
- Then grease a big bowl and move the dough to this bowl. Move the dough all around to dredge finely and then scoop the dough into a plastic bag (well-oiled and big) and seal the bag or cover the dough in a plastic wrap. Put the bag/wrap into the refrigerator overnight or at least 8 hours.
- On the following day, remove the bag/ wrap from the refrigerator and place the dough on a finely floured surface (must not be heavily floured).
- Now, split up the dough into 24 separate pieces and roll the pieces into 24 balls. As the dough is still cool, you will have a good time working with the dough. If your hands feel overly sticky, use (rub) a little oil to make them slippery.
- Grease a round and large pan, preferably a 14-15” deep-dish pizza pan, slightly and place the rolls in that pan. Then give it at least 3 hours so that rolls rise. Take more time, if need be, until the rolls are fully raised and have filled the pan. Then preheat your oven to 375-degree Fahrenheit.
- At last, bake the raised rolls in that preheated oven for around 20-25 minutes (20-minute is the base time). When the rolls turn brown, stop baking and serve to enjoy
Recipe Notes
- In case you cannot arrange a large 14” deep-dish pizza pan, you can use two cake pans of approximately 9-inchs or 10-inches size. But both the must be well greased and for the desired result.
- If you forget to preheat the oven, you must add at least 5 minutes to the cooking time. You may need more time; so, adjust the time to see how the rolls are reacting to the heat.
- If you use a combination of half milk and half water in the yeast mixture, the dish will offer a slightly milky texture. So, I recommend it highly.
- Utilize more of the flour to ensure the dough doesn’t feel as slack as no-knead dough.
Recipe Variations
- If you want to prepare a dairy-free version. You have to skip the milk, and use only water. At the same time, for the butter, use dairy-free butter, which is available in any local grocery store.
- You can also use the leftover sweet potatoes alongside mashed potatoes and some air fryer squash.
How to serve?
Another reason for the sweet potato roll recipe being my favorite is that it can be served with gravy and leftover turkey. These potato rolls can also be utilized to prepare bite-sized sandwiches.
Apart from these, cauliflower, endive, carrot, corn, coconut, orange, pecan, walnut, thyme, potato, pineapple, lime, chestnut, etc. also make a great pair with sweet potato roll.
