Ingredients
- Ground beef (must be 85% lean; 1 1⁄2 lbs.)
- Chicken broth (low in sodium; 2 cups)
- Finely minced garlic (1 clove)
- Finely chopped onions (2 pieces)
- Vegetable oil (1 tablespoon)
- Freshly ground black pepper (3⁄4 teaspoon)
- Freshly ground cinnamon (1 1⁄2 teaspoons)
- Sugar (dark brown; 2 teaspoons)
- Cider vinegar (2 tablespoons)
- Tomato sauce of your preference (canned; 2 cups)
- Tomato paste (2 tablespoons)
- Dried oregano (1 tablespoon)
- Chili powder (2 tablespoons)
- Salt (1 teaspoon)
- Allspice (1⁄4 teaspoon)
Instructions
- Step 01: At first, take a pan and place the 2 pieces of chopped onions on it. Then sauté them in vegetable oil over medium heat until they turn slightly brown on the edges.
- Step 02: Take a bowl and put the onions in that bowl. Then add allspice, oregano, garlic, chili powder, tomato paste, cinnamon, pepper, and salt to that bowl.
- Step 03: Now, stir all the spices together for 2 minutes. Make sure they are finely combined and spreading a pleasing fragrance.
- Step 04: At this moment, add the broth, brown sugar, vinegar, and tomato sauce to the same bowl. Then place the mixture on a pan and start to simmer it. You should scrape up the browned bits, if there is any on the pan bottom, as the mixture gets to the boiling point.
- Step 05: Then comes the time to add meat to the sauce. But before you add the meat, make small pieces of meat by mashing it using a potato masher.
- Step 05: Again, simmer all these ingredients in a pan for 15-20 minutes. After the said minutes, you are done cooking your special sauce.
- Step 05: Now you can serve the Cincinnati chili recipe America’s test kitchen sauce as a topping of spaghetti or hot dogs.
You can also aim for the “chili five ways” serving style. To do this, serve the sauce with sharp cheddar (shredded), finely diced raw onions, or drained and rinsed kidney or cannellini beans or kidney beans alone. (Hey, don’t miss one of my favorite bean recipes, the KFC Green Beans Recipe.
