Ingredients

  • Grass-fed ground beef (1 pound)
  • Swiss cheese (4-8 slices are enough to cover one piece of bread)
  • Onions, preferably caramelized (3/4 cup)
  • Cheddar cheese (4-8 slices are enough to cover one piece of bread)
  • Unsalted butter, preferably softened or mayonnaise (4 tablespoons)
  • Rye bread or any sandwich bread of your liking (8 full slices)
  • For the raw burger patties, black pepper (a sprinkle)
  • For the raw burger patties, kosher salt (a sprinkle)
  • Worcestershire sauce (1 package)

Directions for cooking patty melt recipe

  • Heat butter (2 tablespoons) in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add sliced onions and cook for 20-22 minutes, stirring very frequently. It should not take more than 25 minutes to caramelize the onion perfectly.
  • Then season the mixture with half a spoon of kosher salt and set it aside for the time being. (If you are using caramelized, skip step one.)
  • At the same time, season the ground beef using the other half or remain kosher salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Finishing the seasoning process, shape the ground beef into thin patties, as many as you want.
  • Take a non-stick skillet and heat it over high temperature; place the patties in the skillet and cook for approximately 5 minutes. Flip the patties and cook the opposite side for another 5 minutes. Then take the patties down and set them over paper towels to get rid of this excess grease.
  • Spread the slices of bread using one teaspoon of butter each. Then put two slices of bread on a plate and butter side down on the same plate. Sprinkle the bread pieces with little cheese.
  • Top the bread pieces evenly using onions and place the seasoned and cooked beef patties on top. Then sprinkle the patty melt with the remaining cheese and cover using the other slices of the bed (now butter side down).
  • Again, heat a griddle or skillet over medium heat. Place the sandwich pieces on the skillet/griddle. Make sure to place the sandwiches with butter on the outer side.
  • Cook the sandwiches for 3-5 minutes until they are fully toasted. The flip over and cook the other opposite sides for 3-5 minutes, or more, if need be. By this time, the cheese should melt perfectly.

Now, slice the sandwiches in half, and enjoy the Waffle house patty melt recipe per your liking.

Tips and Tricks

  • You should never skimp on the butter. Use 1 tablespoon of butter maximum for each piece of sandwich. Even it is way too much high compared to any regular patty melt. However, this extra amount of butter will make every bite memorable.
  • Always opt for the 100% grain rye or any other seeded bread. It doesn’t matter whether your bread is gluten-free or wheat bread; just make sure you use pure whole grain.
  • Use grated cheese. It’s way better if you use freshly grated ones. Using pre-shredded cheese is like lowering the value of patty melt. So, grate the cheese yourself.
